play.list 1.2 [4.01.2007]

despite my being on a huge AC/DC rampage this past month, over the last week i've retreated into a more nostalgic musical head-space. conceptual and contemplative music has always been my rock so to speak and once again, i find myself in that place.

this months blog.cast features some of my all time favorite tracks that fall into this category. each work holds a different significance for me which i will share during tomorrow nights live program. i've created a constant mix with this music which will flow without pause for the two hour duration of the program.

Jeff Greinke: Last Wave
The Dead Texan: Glen's Goo
Tim Hecker: Careless Whispers
Alio Die: Descending Past (edit)
probably one of my all time favorite alio die tracks. lifted from the rare suspended feathers album, descending past spins into a calming trance like state of hypnogogia. this track brings back fond memories of warm summer nights in my old 3rd floor apartment on 33rd st. i had close to 10 windows in my studio and i would lay on the floor in the dark with this track playing while the warm air from the open windows would blanket my body. it's pretty amazing how certain tracks can reprise very vivid memories.

Seofon: Rev. 20:13 Teknos (The Seeding) (edit)
O Yuki Conjugate: Tidal Dance
Michael Brook: Hybrid
Temps Perdu? The Day The Earth Melted (edit)
David Parsons: Drilba Ling (edit)
Robert Rich: Live in Stanford 1982 (edit)

Steve Roach: The Eternal Expanse (edit)
next to most of the mystic chords and sacred spaces trilogy this is, in my opinion, one of steve roach's best atmospheric tracks since his "heyday" on fortuna records. i quite frequently will just put this track on loop on my ipod throughout the night. taken from the compilation the ambient expanse (well worth seeking out btw).

Steve Roach: Quiet Friend (edit)
the track quiet friend from roach's 1984 "breakthrough" album structures from silence is the piece that introduced me to ambient music. i first heard it on the hearts of space compilation cassette Starflight 1.0 back in 1987. growing up in north western pennsylvania in the 80's, ANY kind of independent, let alone electronic ambient music was VERY difficult to find. i ended up special ordering structures from silence and 8 weeks later when the cassette arrived, there was no turning back. reflecting on that time, i now realize how lucky i was. the ambient genre was still pretty fresh and had not become over saturated. i think this is why, 20 years later, i can come back to structures from silence and still be [re]moved and transported to another head.space. the album is just very honest. despite being over prolific, i really wish steve would/could take a couple years off, re.energize and come back to the plate fresh with new ideas. this is what made structures from silence such a classic album.

Brian Eno: Constant Dreams
Jeff Pearce: Passage Home (edit)
Matt Borghi & Jason.Sloan: Morning After the Deluge
had to throw in a teaser from the upcoming borghi.sloan record set for release later this year.
